LEGISREPORTS NG – A Lawmaker in the House of Representatives, Rep Andrew Uchendu, from Rivers State has raised alarm over the safety of the Governor of the State, Rotimi Amaechi, saying that the harassment on him by the agents of the Federal Government was becoming a source of concern.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja today entitled,”Before Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi Dies”, Rep Uchendu representing Ikerre/Emohua Federal Constituency, the same Constituency with the Governor declared that Amaechi was being harassed unjustly by the Agents of the Federal and called for the intervention of all well meaning Nigerians to stop the madness.
He pointed out that as an elected Representative of his people including the Governor, he decided to speak out to unusual harassment of one of his constituents by the Agents of the Federal Governments who on each occasions claimed that they were acting on “Order from above”.
According to him,”the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) Chapter iv sub sections (40) and (41) guaranteed every Nigerian freedom of Association and Movement, but events of the recent weeks, around Amaechi which have come in rather very quick succession have cast a pale of fog on my vision that I am begin to wonder what might become of the life of Amaechi if the attention of Nigerians and the Government of Nigeria are drawn to these unsavoury events”.
He cited three instances when the Agents of the Federal Government in uniforms openly harassed the Governor in Akure on his way to Ekiti State and Kano States during which his Aircraft were either impounded or refused taking off while he was also forced to personally drove himself to Abuja through the night from Kano when his aircraft was impounded by the Agents of the Federal Government.
The lawmaker who stated that he decided to draw the attention of the Public and the international Community to the scenario in Rivers State lamented that “what is going on now is aberration in any democratic setting any where in the World”, adding that “when such events took place randomly at intervals, it is obvious that it will continue and if it continues, what will be our gains?”.
He pleaded with all men of goodwill to prevail on the federal Government and its Agents to allow Chibuike Amaechi to live, saying “he is a full-blooded Nigerian citizen and elected by the People of Rivers State of Nigeria”.
