LEGISREPORTS NG – The Governor of Benue state, Gabriel Suswam has rejected the results of the Benue East senatorlal district polls in which the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Barnabas Gemade, was declared winner by the lndeoendent National Electoral commission (lNEC).
Suswam also passed a vote of no confidence on the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Instifanus Dafwang and called for his transfer from the state.
“The REC’s attitude, disposition and behaviour obviously showed that he had compromised his position to deprive me of victory. We no longer have confidence him to conduct the subsequent elections we call on Prof Attahiru Jega to change him ”
The governor who is seeking a mandate to represent his people in the upper legislative chamber said he drew the attention of the commissioner to irregularities that occurred during the election held on March 28, but that he did nothing about the complaints.
Gabriel Suswam while speaking to journalists in Makurdi, said the REC disregarded the objection raised by his agent, Solomon Wombo, during the presentation of the results at the INEC headquarters. Wombo had raised concern that over 128,000 people in nine districts were disenfranchised from voting, with a plea to re-conduct elections in the affected areas.
Suswam maintained that if elections were re-conducted in the areas which results were cancelled by INEC because of irregularities, he would win without batting an eye, given that there was only 20,000 votes difference between him and the winner.
