REPS NEWS: SURE-P: Reps probe N28bn Abuja-Lokoja road contract—as contractor exonerated self from inflated cost

LEGISREPORTS NG – House of Representatives on Tuesday begun the probe of the N28 billion spent under the Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) on Abuja-Abaji dual carriageway.

James Faleke, chairman, House Committee on Anti-Corruption, National Ethics and Values, gave the hint after a meeting with the management of Dantata and Sawoe led by its managing director, Heidschuster Udo, at the National Assembly complex, Abuja.

The ongoing investigation sequel to a series of petitions some Nigerians alleging that these interventions have been marred by irregularities and lack of transparency on the N28 billion contract it procured from the Federal Ministry of Works for the construction of the Abuja-Abaji dual carriageway.

The road project which was awarded at the cost of N11 billion in 2006 however skyrocketed to N28 billion in 2012 representing N17 billion above the initial contract sum.

While probing the contract, the Committee lamented that the variation was an indication that the nation may have been short-changed, hence the need to investigate.

Faleke, who spoke on the outcome of the meeting, disclosed that the construction firm had confessed that it did not seek any variation but got the contract awarded to it by the government.

He said “we have observed that it was when SURE-P came into operation that several federal  road projects across the country witnessed  an upward review in their contract sums.

“We are conducting this investigation to establish if there is value for money in these contracts or if it is just a waste of funds.”
