INSECURITY: Police arrest 32 cultists in Bayelsa
LEGISREPORTS NG – No fewer than 32 suspected cultists and arsonists have been arrested by the Bayelsa state police command.
LEGISREPORTS gathered that 14 of the suspects were arrested for cultism while 18 others were held over their attempt to burn the palace of their traditional ruler in Oruma, Ogbia local government area of the state.
Investigations revealed that the suspected arsonists hatched a plot toraze the palace over allegations bordering on mismanagement of oilmoney by their king.
Sources said the suspects were on their way to execute the plot when a team of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) rounded them up.Confirming the development, the Commissioner of police, Mr. Hilary Opara who praised his men for stopping what he said would have thrown the community into a prolonged crisis, urged the youths to explore legal means of addressing their grievances instead of resorting to jungle justice.
The Commissioner further confirmed that about 14 suspected cultists were in the custody of the police, adding that while some of them had been arraigned and remanded in prison custody, others were awaiting prosecution.
According to him the suspects risked 10-year jail term if convicted asprovided by the state’s anti-cultism law.
