LEGISREPORTS NG -The Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, Hogan Bassey has confirmed that at least one policeman and an unidentified civilian were yesterday morning killed by suspected sea robbers at the Ikang jetty, in Bakassi local government area of the state.
It was gathered that at about 1am yesterday some men approached the jetty from the sea in a speedboat and without any provocation opened fire at the border patrol base in the jetty. In the attack one of the policemen and another civilian who was in the vicinity was killed. The PPRO said the attacked was unprovoked and they are yet to determine its cause.
He said they were on the trail of the criminals assured that those involved would be brought to book. When journalists visited the area yesterday it was gathered that the attack may be related to an incident that occurred recently when the Navy killed some pirates along the Calabar waterways. The Navy had Tuesday morning in shoot out with sea pirates killed at least four of the robbers and arrested one of them named Bassey Bassey. Bassey said he is from the Akpabyuo, close to the area where the attack took place yesterday.
A resident of the area said they believed strongly, the attack yesterday was a revenge mission for the robbers that were killed earlier in the week. One of the security men who begged not to be named said they thought the men were fishermen or residents of the area. He said while they were still watching them come in, they immediately started firing at them without any provocation.
